The Porcelain Project

I am celebrating 20 couples who have been together for 20 years or more.

This is how you can be part of this celebration, as one of the 20 couples...

1/2

It is becoming increasingly rare for couples to be together that long...

The average duration of life-partner relationships in the US is only 8.2 years. In contrast, but still surprisingly low, is Italy, topping at 18 years, while my home country of South Africa comes in at 12 years.

Much like having a high staff turnover in corporate, being able to celebrate a together-versary anything after 10 years, is quite the accomplishment, and should be celebrated in the grandest sense.

I'm not saying it's been easy the whole way but as the Guinness World Record holder's

Zelmyra and Herbert Fisher said,

Everyone who plants a seed and harvests the crop celebrates together. We are individuals but accomplish more together.

Here's a step by step breakdown:

I

Any and all couples who have been in a life partnership (married or not) for twenty years or more are welcome, and encouraged, to participate.

V

I will guide you through each detail - from what time is best to shoot, to wardrobe selection and posing, right through to your image selection.

II

The cost of participation in the Porcelain Project is only $150, for an experience value of $490, and includes a printed 11x14 keepsake of your choice.

VI

Although makeup and Hair Styling is not included, it is strongly encouraged and can be arranged for you with a local artist for an additional fee.

III

Before your session, we will have a consultation via video call, or in-person if you choose, and create a mood board, tailoring your session to you as a couple.

VII

Two weeks after your shoot, we will have a Selection Session in person or via video call, where you two will be able to choose your favorite image as your keepsake.

IV

Your session location will be discussed and decided on during our consultation. Anything goes: from grand to intimate. Forest, mountains, studio, home, hotel, ballroom...

VIII

No additional purchase is necessary, however, a full range of Wall Art and Show Piece boxes will be available to order.

Due to the nature of this project, and my love of travel, I encourage all couples to participate, no matter your location. With COVID restrictions still in place, it just may take me some time to get to you depending on where you are in the world.

Frequestion Asked Questions...

Why Couples?

Stereotypically, couples discount their own importance when it comes to documenting life:

Couples with kids put more emphasis on watching the kids grow than themselves and their evolution goes unseen. Couples without kids often feel they are 'not as important' and sadly do not view themselves under the genre of 'family', with the often-heard phrase, 'there's no one to inherit this, so why bother?". Mature couples say they no longer need to be seen or photographed as if their journey is over.

I want to start changing those mindsets. You are a role model to those around you in ways you probably don't comprehend, it's time you show them why.

Why are there only 20 couples allowed to participate?

I have a goal of photographing 100 couples a year, that's 2 couples a week. However, those numbers are a little overwhelming for an audience to relate to. For the Porcelain Project, I will be spotlighting (at least) 20 types of couples who are grandly under-represented.

Where are you in life right now? One of these or somewhere else?  Dating, engaged, newlywed, life-partners, married, childless by choice, parents of furbabies, parents of human babies, foster parents, travel couple, military couple, professional duo, retired, grandparents, great grandparents, same-sex, heterosexual, non-binary, trans, mixed-race...

What are you going to do with our photos?

My end goal is a printed exhibition, representing at least one of each genre of the couples I listed in the prior questions, and accompanying quotes, adages and memorable stories.

In addition to that, I will be promoting The Porcelain Project using our images, on various social media platforms.

Should you choose to be photographed but not participate in the project, everything will work exactly the same, however the cost of your portrait session will be $350, and I will still gift you a Keepsake Print.

Do we get to keep our photos?

Included in your experience is a Keepsake print matted to 11x14 size as well as it's accompanying digital image in high resolution, which you are able to choose for yourself during our Selection Session.

The remaining images will be available to purchase and will also include the accompanying digital files. Images will never be deleted.

We're not married, may we still participate?

The idea behind this project is to create a broad collection of couples who have spent at least 20 consecutive years of their lives together, whether that is married, life partnered or dating-and-married.

Many couples have not had the legal option of marriage until recently and many couples choose not to marry legally at all, so let me know where you're at.

We've been married a short time, may we participate?

The idea behind this project is to create a broad collection of couples who have spent at least 20 consecutive years of their lives together.

So, to keep that math simple, if you're 40 years old, started dating at 20 and you've been married for 5 years... that's 20 years together :)

If you're 60 years old, started dating at 30 and you've been married for 20 years... that's also 20 years together.

What is the cost of participation?

The cost of participation in this project is $150 per couple, however, the value is $490.  This is made up of $350 for the booking fee and $140 for your 11x14 matted image, which is printed and shipped to you from Italy.

Makeup and hairstyling and grooming are not included, but are encouraged, and can be arranged for you with a local artist. This would be an additional fee and will be solely for the artist and priced at their discretion.

What is a Selection Session?

A Selection Session is our third date ;) We will either get together in person or via video call 2-3 weeks after your photoshoot where I will reveal your adorable images. There are usually happy tears, laughter, and a lot of whoo-hooing! This is where we will select the image you would like to receive as your Keepsake, as well as any additional images and products you would like to purchase if you so choose.

Why did you call it "The Porcelain Project"?

Traditionally, and according to Wikipedia, the UK and South Africa, the anniversary gift given for the celebration of 20 years, is porcelain. Take a look here for yourself :) Some websites say it's China (like the plates not the country), and that porcelain is for the 18th year. 🤷🏻‍♀️

INSERT JOKE HERE about the 'porcelain' throne, and how you've survived some serious sh1t over the last 20 years of life together and deserve a freakin' medal.

Are we able to gift this to our friends/parents?

Of course! I am a huge supporter of gifting!

If you have friends and family whom you know fit the project, please absolutely share it with them. Especially if you know the wouldn't do it for themselves. You are able to purchase a voucher here, full in the amount of $150, and put your message in the notes section.

A copy of the personalized voucher will be sent to you and your chosen couple via email.

You are in Wilmington, NC, where will our shoot be?

If you're not local to Wilmington, NC, either we can make a weekend of it and you come here, or ... Have bag! Will Travel!! I can come to you. So the additional costs involved with travel will be discussed during our consultation.

If you are outside of the US, it might take me a little longer to get to you with many countries not allowing US residents entry. So we will chat and make a plan!

What if we want more than just the Keepsake Print?

I have a wide selection of wall art and show piece box options, all of which are hand made from Italy and will be personalized to your portrait session. There are various sizes and finish options as well so that your printed images are 100% you.

My favorite is the classic wall art is the satin finish acrylic prints, that have an elegant feel and crisp finish. On the other hand, for a more modern, creative look, my favorite is the Amalfi Panels. There are also velvet touch canvases, and brushed metals prints to choose from
